When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

Children are watching you and doing as you do,
not as you say.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you hang my
first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a
stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind
to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make my
favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little
things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a
prayer, and I knew that there is a God I could always
talk to, and I learned to trust in Him.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you make a
meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I
learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you take care
of our house and everyone in it, and I learned we have
to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw how you
handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't
feel good, and I learned that I would have to be
responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw tears come
from your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things
hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking I saw that you
cared, and I wanted to be everything that I could be..

When you thought I wasn't looking I learned most of
life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and
productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking I looked at you and
wanted to say,'Thanks for all the things I saw when
you thought I wasn't looking.'

Each of us (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, friend)
influences the life of a child.

How will you touch the life of someone today? Just by
sending this to someone else, you will probably make
them at least think about their influence on others.
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Memories.....The Walrus and the Carpenter

As a child I was quite fond of children's poetry. My brothers and I had a collection of books called Junior Classics, Young Folks' Shelf of Books by PF Collier & Son.

And one of the volumes (the 10th volume as I recall) was poetry. There were many great poems in there and "The Walrus and the Carpenter" was one of them.
Fast forward to school days. Every year we were required to memorize and recite a poem, and also a speech that we wrote and memorized and performed in class. There always seemed to be the same classic poems recited... Casey at the Bat, The Cremation of Sam McGee, The Walrus and the Carpenter. Obviously this poem was not just a favorite of mine.

I decided to change the name of my blog. I had been wanting to do this for quite some time. I didn't really know what I wanted to change the name to. But I kind of liked the idea of using a whimsical catchy phrase. What could be better than a line from Alice in Wonderland.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun was shining on the sea,
Shining with all his might:
He did his very best to make
The billows smooth and bright--
And this was odd, because it was
The middle of the night.

The moon was shining sulkily,
Because she thought the sun
Had got no business to be there
After the day was done--
"It's very rude of him," she said,
"To come and spoil the fun!"

The sea was wet as wet could be,
The sands were dry as dry.
You could not see a cloud, because
No cloud was in the sky:
No birds were flying overhead--
There were no birds to fly.

The Walrus and the Carpenter
Were walking close at hand;
They wept like anything to see
Such quantities of sand:
"If this were only cleared away,"
They said, "it would be grand!"

"If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose," the Walrus said,
"That they could get it clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.

"O Oysters, come and walk with us!"
The Walrus did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Along the briny beach:
We cannot do with more than four,
To give a hand to each."

The eldest Oyster looked at him,
But never a word he said:
The eldest Oyster winked his eye,
And shook his heavy head--
Meaning to say he did not choose
To leave the oyster-bed.

But four young Oysters hurried up,
All eager for the treat:
Their coats were brushed, their faces washed,
Their shoes were clean and neat--
And this was odd, because, you know,
They hadn't any feet.

Four other Oysters followed them,
And yet another four;
And thick and fast they came at last,
And more, and more, and more--
All hopping through the frothy waves,
And scrambling to the shore.

The Walrus and the Carpenter
Walked on a mile or so,
And then they rested on a rock
Conveniently low:
And all the little Oysters stood
And waited in a row.

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."

"But wait a bit," the Oysters cried,
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are out of breath,
And all of us are fat!"
"No hurry!" said the Carpenter.
They thanked him much for that.

"A loaf of bread," the Walrus said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Pepper and vinegar besides
Are very good indeed--
Now if you're ready, Oysters dear,
We can begin to feed."

"But not on us!" the Oysters cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After such kindness, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"The night is fine," the Walrus said.
"Do you admire the view?

"It was so kind of you to come!
And you are very nice!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"Cut us another slice:
I wish you were not quite so deaf--
I've had to ask you twice!"

"It seems a shame," the Walrus said,
"To play them such a trick,
After we've brought them out so far,
And made them trot so quick!"
The Carpenter said nothing but
"The butter's spread too thick!"

"I weep for you," the Walrus said:
"I deeply sympathize."
With sobs and tears he sorted out
Those of the largest size,
Holding his pocket-handkerchief
Before his streaming eyes.

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?'
But answer came there none--
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

Dinner Was Fabulous

My special Valentines dinner was fabulous if I do say so myself. Never mind that it took all afternoon to prepare and was over with in ten minutes. It was worth it to see my sweety enjoying it. And we have leftovers... what more could you ask for?

Hope everybody had a great Valentines Day!

Happy Valentines Day!!

Happy Valentines Day!!

I was very surprised this week when Bruce suggested I go ahead and order the newly released movie on dvd... The Time Traveler's Wife. I had been hinting I would like to see it after seeing
the advertisements on television for the past couple of weeks.
I quickly went to ITunes and downloaded it before he could change his mind... :-)
I still haven't sat down to watch it but I will very soon.

Then... yesterday afternoon Bruce went out to pick up a few groceries that we needed and came home with these.........

This was a real surprise since I had already ordered my movie. The flowers don't look exactly as they looked yesterday when he came home with them. I didn't even think to take a photo of how they looked in all their freshness! They are gorgeous... multicolored. I especially love the mauve ones, and the coral ones, and the yellow ones, and the red ones, and the pink ones, and the white ones... oh heck, let's just say I love them all!!

I always dry my roses because I love the look of dried flower arrangements. I place them all around the house and I always feel like I got my moneys worth because I can enjoy my flowers forever. That is why the roses look slightly worse for wear in the photo above because I had already hung them upside down in my kitchen before I had the idea to take a photo of them. There they are, hanging from a hook on the side of my cupboard in my kitchen where they will live for the next couple of weeks after which time they will be sufficiently dry enough to spray with hairspray and arrange in some kind of receptacle which I haven't decided on just yet.

The gifts this year were an especially wonderful surprise because Bruce is not exactly into Valentines Day. He has always reminded me year after year that Valentine's Day is for kids. An odd viewpoint in my opinion but this is how he feels. I think because they used to make a big deal out of it in grade school and so he has always felt it was something that was designed for kids.

Normally we would be going out for a special Valentines supper but this year since Bruce has been so generous I am planning a nice meal here at home. I have been busy working on the menu and here is what I have come up with.....

Chicken Cordon Bleu

Twice Baked Stuffed Potatoes
Chocolate, Strawberry, Cookie Parfaits

There is no better present for Bruce than food so I know he will enjoy the meal I have prepared for him.

Dog Day Afternoon

This is Jett enjoying his bed. Jett knows just how to relax and get comfy in his bed. We realized as soon as we brought him home that he loves to burrow deep underneath the covers. Apparently this is typical chihuahua behavior. So we made sure he had his own little blanket.
Usually Jett gets completely underneath the covers. I had moved his bed into my office with me while I worked today and this time he was only partially covered when I started snapping pictures.
He is so adorable... and makes an excellent subject for photos!
Here he is tonight completely covered.

Sweet dreams Jetty!

I BELIEVE

This is by far one of the nicest forwards I have received in my email.... and the photographs are absolutely breathtaking. Take a moment to read the message and revel in the photos. Your soul will thank you.
I Believe... That just because two people argue, It doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, It doesn't mean they do love each other.

I Believe... That we don't have to change friends if We understand that friends change.
I Believe.... That no matter how good a friend is, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

I Believe... That true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

I Believe... That you can do something in an instant That will give you heartache for life.

I Believe.... Two people can look at the exact same Thing and see something totally different.

I Believe... That you should always leave loved ones with Loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I Believe.... That you can keep going long after you think you can't.

I Believe.... That we are responsible for what We do, no matter how we feel.

I Believe... That even when you think you have no more to give, When a friend cries out to you - you will find the strength to help.

I Believe.... That either you control your attitude or it controls you.

I Believe... That heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

I Believe.... That my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

I Believe... That credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

I Believe... That sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, But that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I Believe.... That maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had And what you've learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

I Believe.... The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; They just make the most of everything they have.

I Believe.... That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others. Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself..

I Believe... That the people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

I Believe.... That our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, But, we are responsible for who we become.

I Believe... That you shouldn't be so eager to find Out a secret. It could change your life Forever.

Button, Button, Who's Got the Button?

As a small child, I remember my Mother had a button jar! I loved the button jar... it was magical to me.

When my Mother would get the jar out to find a button to sew on a garment I would take the jar and empty it out on the floor and admire all the pretty buttons. Some of them looked like precious gems and jewels to my childlike mind.

The jar also had a lovely musky scent to it. I am not sure what was in it before it became the button jar but I loved to inhale the fragrance. The name on the jar lid is Bonny Brae Brand. I did an internet search for this name but came up empty handed. Perhaps one of you might know what it was?

I never forgot that button jar and was delighted when my Mother gave it to me a couple of years ago. I am now it's proud owner and I remember some of those buttons which are still in there that I thought were gems.

They still are to me!
